Bio-chips for early diagnosis of neurodegenerative diseases

The aim of the project is the industrial research and development of a Bio-chip with further specialization in the use for the diagnosis and treatment of neurodegenerative diseases with emphasis on Parkinson’s disease.

Bio-chips are small laboratories that can perform hundreds of concurrent biochemical reactions, allowing researchers to quickly obtain a large number of biological analyses, from disease diagnosis to detecting health-related agents.

In this project Bio-chips will be combined with complementary sensor platforms used to monitor and measure biometrical parameters (e.g. pulse, breath rate, oxygen in blood, electrocardiogram signals, blood pressure, muscle electromyography signals), data processing and decision support systems with machine learning capabilities, to implement an integrated system to detect the risk of the disease and/or support its early diagnosis. This system will be a powerful aid to the specialists (doctors) in fighting the disease and also in monitoring its progression. The project includes experimental and pilot operation for the highest degree of operational readiness and concludes with a feasibility study in order to identify further steps (e.g. commercial exploitation potential).
